Calgary is located in Alberta, towards the south of Canada. It covers a land area of 5,107.55 km2, with the city covering a total area of over 825 km2. It has latitude of about 51° North, and 114° West longitude which therefore results in long days in summer and long nights in winter. Calgary experiences a sunny, windy, and cool continental climate due to the elevation of the city, which is 1,048 m above sea level, and the distance to the Rocky Mountains that is towards the north. it also has bodies of water such as elbow river, bow river, and more man-made lake or reservoirs, therefore causing Calgary to have the warmest winters of all the major prairie cities.

The population of Calgary in 2011 was 1,205,170, making it the largest city in Alberta even though the capital of Alberta is Edmonton. I think this is because as I mentioned earlier, Calgary has a warmer average temperatures, causing it to be more comfortable compared to Edmonton, which is located above Calgary. Calgary's population density was 236 persons per km2 while the national's population density is 3.7 persons per km2 in 2011.
This population pyramid shows how many females and males there are in each age group during 2011, Calgary.
The main industrial of Calgary that makes up the economy is the energy industrial which consists of combining oil and gas with renewable energy. The oil boom happened in 1970s, boosting Canada's economy. Calgary’s energy industry is the third largest reserves of crude in the world and the largest deposits of oil sands in the world. Nearly 70% of Canada's crude oil and almost 80% of its natural gas is produced in Alberta.

Since the oil boom, people started to move into Alberta cities such as Edmonton and Calgary. These cities are close to the oil sands and since there are more job opportunities and faster economic growth, the population of Calgary and Edmonton rises.

In Calgary, there are lots of head office of major oil and gas company, major pipeline operators and manufacturer, drilling companies, oilfield services, and basically any other work areas that serves the energy industry, influencing it to have the highest concentration of engineers in Canada. However, other than that, Calgary’s employment is also focused on financial services, film, television and creative industries, transportation and logistics industries.

This is the ethnic table of the population in Calgary 2011. Although this total population of Calgary is different from the data i got above (which both shows the data of 2011), the percentage of each population group would not change much, therefore it still can be used to compare. ”A visible minority” refers to people other than Aboriginal people, who are non-Caucasian in race or non-white in colour. From the table we can tell that Calgary’s visible minority population is made out of quite a number of people from Asia, taking about 22.5 % of the population.

Overall, the city is growing, not only in terms of economical but also in population. This is all caused by the oil boom in the 1970s. Without it, Alberta would not be like how it is now, also, there will be a lot more unemployment rate and other problems. Therefore, after my research, i think that Calgary is a very urban area with a more comfortable climate that consists of quite a number of immigrants who come to work under the services of the energy industry.
